Check an AI Research Agent’s Sources Before Acting

Verify consequential research claims with source passages, dates and scope, then preserve conflicts and unknowns in the next handoff.

Two contradictory source notes and an uncertainty card inform one corrected brief.

What you will learn

  • Match each consequential claim to a source passage and scope.
  • Handle conflicting sources and missing evidence explicitly.
  • Carry corrected evidence forward without implying permission to act.

Check an AI research agent’s claim against the source passage, its date and its scope before using the claim in a decision. A plausible summary and a list of links are not enough: you need to know which evidence supports each consequential statement and what remains uncertain.

For founders, the practical question is often whether an investor, customer or partner appears relevant now. A stale profile can produce an inaccurate fit note, while two current official pages can disagree. Use the claim register and conflict exercise below to keep those cases visible.

Break the result into claims you can verify

Start with statements that could change a decision: a person’s role, a firm’s current strategy, a program’s availability, a customer result or a material number. Preserve the original wording so that the review does not quietly move the goalposts.

For each claim, locate the supporting passage, not just the homepage. Record the page owner, observation date, any date attached to the underlying fact and what the source actually establishes. A source may confirm that a firm made an investment without establishing that it currently accepts the same type of company.

Claim-review fieldWhat to recordWhy it matters
Exact claimThe sentence or number being checkedPrevents a weaker fact from being used to defend a stronger statement
Source and locatorOfficial page/document and relevant passageLets the next reviewer find the evidence
DatesObservation date and source/fact date where shownSeparates a current read from an old underlying assertion
ScopeProgram, geography, period, audience and definitionsPrevents a local or historical fact becoming universal
Evidence stateSupported, inference, conflict, missing or outdatedKeeps uncertainty visible
Permitted next useInternal question, revised brief or approved external wordingPrevents research from becoming an unauthorized action

Use “missing” when no relevant evidence was available. Do not turn it into “not supported by the product,” “not interested” or “does not invest.” Those are claims of their own and may need different evidence.

Work through a conflicting-source example

The following is a fictional investor-research exercise. It does not describe an actual fund. A draft brief says, “Northbank Ventures only backs pre-seed software companies in Europe.” The packet contains two sources: a 2024 directory profile describing European pre-seed software investments and a current firm strategy page discussing seed and Series A companies in several markets.

The older directory can establish what that profile said in 2024. It cannot establish an exclusive current mandate. The newer firm page is a stronger source for its stated current strategy, but the reviewer still needs to check whether the relevant page covers the exact fund or program being considered.

Draft claimEvidence availableReview decision
“Only pre-seed”Old directory profile; current strategy page includes seed and Series ARemove the exclusive current claim; state the supported stages with source and scope
“Europe only”Old profile names Europe; current source describes several marketsDo not infer a current geographic restriction from the old profile
“A fit for Cedar Signal”Founder criteria and verified firm strategy have not yet been comparedKeep fit as a question for the founder, not an established conclusion
“Ready to request an introduction”No connector consent or outreach decision in the packetResearch does not establish permission to contact anyone

A supported fictional revision might be: “The current firm strategy page describes seed and Series A investing across the listed markets. The older directory profile is narrower. Confirm the applicable fund and current criteria before deciding fit.” This communicates what changed and preserves the remaining question.

If both sources were current official pages with incompatible instructions, do not choose one simply because it has a more convenient answer. Record both assertions, the displayed dates and the exact clarification needed from the source owner. A later page date alone does not prove that an unrelated program’s rules apply.

Ask the agent for a claim-to-source register

Review this research brief using only [permitted source packet with URLs, passages and dates]. Extract the consequential claims verbatim. For each, return the supporting passage, source owner, observation date, source/fact date, scope and evidence state. Separate supported facts, inferences, conflicts and missing evidence. Check units, periods and definitions for numbers. Propose minimal wording corrections and list the questions a human must resolve. Do not invent sources, infer fit from a title or contact anyone. I will review the evidence and decide the next use.

The prompt is an evidence-review aid. It does not prove that the cited pages were fetched, that the relevant account is connected or that the agent’s interpretation is correct. Open the material claims yourself or have the accountable reviewer check them through a permitted source.

Check the output’s source coverage

Inspect a few difficult claims first: the statement with “only,” the newest product capability, the number with a vague denominator and the fact whose absence would change the recommendation. If these fail, do not accept a polished overall narrative as compensation.

Check whether a source supports the same entity. Similar names, rebranded products and people with matching titles can be confused. Confirm the official domain and the relevant organization, product or program before carrying facts forward.

For numbers, retain the unit and period. Three paying accounts, three trials and three conversations are different facts. A percentage change needs a defined baseline, comparable measurement and a nonzero denominator. If those are absent, report the original quantities and the missing definition.

Hand off the evidence without widening authority

Handoff itemExample for the next reviewer
Verified statementCurrent strategy text and its exact scope
Conflict retainedOlder profile differs; do not silently reuse it as current
Decision ownerFounder decides whether the stated criteria match the company
Next questionWhich current fund or program applies?
Action boundaryNo introduction, outreach, CRM stage change or disclosure authorized by this research

Keep the corrected claim and its sources attached to the resulting brief. A subsequent writing task should not recreate the stronger unsupported wording. If a new source arrives, review the affected claim rather than declaring the entire old brief current again.

Common questions

Are official sources always consistent?

No. Official pages can differ by program, period or update state. Preserve a genuine conflict and identify the clarification needed.

Can the agent decide investor fit?

It can organize evidence and criteria. The founder owns the actual fit and relationship decision, including context that may not be in the packet.

Where should the corrected evidence go?

Use the governed record or reviewed brief appropriate to the job, then define the next handoff with the context guide. The quality rubric helps evaluate whether source traceability improved.
