An update card brings progress, consistent metrics, and useful requests together.

What you will learn

  • Write a useful operating update
  • Keep metrics consistent and sourced
  • Make a specific request for help

A startup shareholder update gives existing investors a clear account of progress, challenges, and the next work. Use consistent metric definitions and explain what changed. Make any request for help specific enough that a reader can decide whether they are the right person to act.

Worked fictional update

Subject: [Fictional Company] , September operating update

This month we completed the defined onboarding workflow and began reviewing repeat use in the first pilot cohort.

Evidence: 12 of 30 pilot locations completed the coordination task in both observation windows. Six have agreed to a paid continuation. These are pilot observations, not a broad product-market-fit claim.

Challenge: ten locations have not completed the first workflow. Our product owner is reviewing setup friction and whether the job fits those teams.

Next priorities: complete those interviews, reconcile delivery cost, and approve the next customer test.

Request: if you know a clinic operations manager who has evaluated scheduling coordination, would you ask whether they would welcome a short research conversation? Please do not share their details without permission.

The numbers are invented for teaching. The update connects the facts to a decision and asks for a permissioned, relevant conversation. It does not imply all pilot accounts are paying customers.

Maintain a metric-and-source card

Metric: [definition]
Period: [dates]
Current result: [value + source]
Comparable prior result: [same definition]
Change: [signed amount or percent where meaningful]
Coverage limit: [missing / immature data]
Approved owner: [role]

When a prior denominator is zero or unavailable, explain the change without manufacturing a percentage. Keep the definitions the same between updates, or clearly state why they changed. A recurring update should help readers understand the business rather than chase a different impressive number each month.

Review before sending

  • Check every factual number against its approved source.
  • Keep forecasts and historical results distinct.
  • Confirm the recipient list and sharing permissions.
  • Make requests relevant and easy to act on.
  • Record the next owner when a reader responds.

Maintain a simple calendar: collection of inputs, source review, founder approval, sending, and follow-through. Allow enough time to fix mismatched definitions instead of treating the send date as the only task.

Put the lesson to work

Keep approved inputs, recipient context, and follow-through connected in Finta. This lesson teaches the update; the Workflow shows how to execute the job. Explore the investor-update workflow.
