How to Apply to Y Combinator with Finta
Build an evidence-backed YC application draft without inventing traction.

What you will learn
- Build an evidence-backed YC application draft without inventing traction.
- Separate company facts, assumptions and unanswered questions.
- Review and submit through YC’s official channel.
To apply to Y Combinator, use YC’s official application, describe the company in plain language, and check that every material statement is supported by your own evidence. Before writing polished answers, build a small register of product facts, customer learning, founder contributions, and unresolved questions. That register is the practical tool in this guide.
The application belongs to you. Aurora can help organize supplied text and identify gaps; it cannot create your achievements, predict selection, or submit through YC’s portal on your behalf. Read the official YC application instructions before preparing a draft.
YC application status and scope
Source check: October 22, 2026. YC’s application page lists Winter 2027, running January to March in San Francisco. Its on-time deadline is November 2, 2026, at 8 p.m. Pacific Time. Late applications can still be considered, with a different response expectation. Treat this as a dated observation, not an evergreen annual deadline. Check the live call immediately before submitting.
YC’s FAQ distinguishes applying from participating and addresses early-stage companies, solo founders, incorporation, and the in-person program. Read the relevant answers for your own situation instead of assuming that an idea-stage company is automatically ineligible or that an application resolves relocation questions.
Start with the live questions and a company-evidence register
Open the current form yourself and record its actual prompts and limits in a private working document. The categories below are an editorial organizing method, not a copy of YC’s form or a private admissions rubric. Use one row for each consequential claim. A source can be an approved research note, a product record, a dated measurement, or a founder-confirmed biography.
YC application preparation register
| Topic | Draft statement | Evidence to attach privately | Gap or review action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer and problem | Who experiences which specific difficulty? | Interview notes or observed workflow, with permission | Separate what people said from what you inferred. |
| Product today | What can someone actually use? | Current demo or accurate product description | Label prototype, manual and planned work. |
| Progress | What changed during a defined period? | Metric definition, period and source record | Distinguish interviews, trials, customers and revenue. |
| Founders | What did each person personally build or achieve? | Confirmed role, contribution and concrete example | Remove borrowed employer or team-wide credit. |
| Insight | Why might your approach work? | Observation, experiment or technical reasoning | State what could disprove the hypothesis. |
| Unknowns | What important question is still open? | A named test or missing source | Give the next evidence-gathering action. |
| Program fit | What work would you do during this batch? | Milestone and practical participation constraints | Verify timing, location and current terms separately. |
Do not upload sensitive customer names, private contracts, or credentials just to make the register look complete. A redacted source locator can be enough for drafting. The person responsible for the underlying fact should approve what enters the application.
Prepare in five passes
- Freeze the facts. Choose one source date for the draft. Reconcile the latest product state and metric definitions before two founders write conflicting versions.
- Answer first. Write a direct opening sentence for the question actually asked. Put context afterward. YC’s published application advice emphasizes specific, matter-of-fact explanations; use it as guidance, not a promise that a writing style earns admission.
- Mark uncertainty. Separate measured results, customer reports, your interpretation, and future plans. A good sentence can contain an honest limitation.
- Review as a team. Ask another founder to explain the company back without extra narration. Correct confusion rather than adding impressive-sounding adjectives.
- Transfer carefully. Paste into the live form, respect its current limits, and inspect every field and attachment. Do not treat a document export or an AI response as a submission receipt.
Worked example: a company with research, not revenue
Fictional teaching case. RouteLedger is a prototype for small maintenance businesses. Its founders have eight interviews, three supervised prototype trials, and no paying customers. These invented figures exist only to demonstrate honest evidence labels.
Vague draft: We are revolutionizing field service with a proven AI platform that customers love.
Evidence-backed revision: We are building a prototype that helps maintenance coordinators keep a customer’s repair approval attached to the job. We interviewed eight coordinators and ran three supervised trials. We have not charged anyone yet; our next test is whether coordinators can complete the approval handoff without founder assistance.
The revision explains the customer, work, product state, observed learning, and next test. It does not turn research participants into customers or call supervised work autonomous. In a real application, replace every fictional fact with your own supported information. If a founder cannot verify one of the numbers, remove it or label it unknown.
Decide what to fix before polishing
Use a simple triage: correct a false statement, resolve a contradiction, then improve an unclear explanation. Missing evidence should produce a research task, not a more confident sentence. If two founders use different meanings of “active,” agree on the definition and period before choosing the more flattering number.
For short answer editing, use the separate YC application answer examples. For a founder’s background, the established founder bio worksheet provides a different, narrower resource.
Practice prompt: audit the application evidence
Try this with Aurora AI in Finta, Claude, or Codex. Supply only material you are authorized to share. This is a text-review exercise, not access to the accelerator portal or permission to send an application.
Help me prepare a YC application draft for human review.
Inputs: [current official prompts and limits], [company description], [founder-confirmed facts], [dated evidence register], [current product state], [unknowns], [materials I may share].
Use only the supplied information. For each prompt, return the direct answer, supporting evidence, unknowns and a proposed revision. Distinguish a measurement from a plan and a prototype from a live capability. Do not invent achievements, users, revenue or YC selection criteria.
Ask for missing information before making a consequential claim. Flag inconsistent definitions across founders. Finish with a founder-review checklist and a list of facts to recheck in the live application. All output is a draft. Do not access accounts, change records, send messages or submit anything.Common preparation questions
Should an early-stage company pretend it is further along?
No. Report the actual state and consult YC’s current FAQ about stage. A clear prototype description is more useful than a commercial claim you cannot substantiate.
Does this worksheet replace the application form?
No. It organizes your evidence. The form, instructions and limits come from YC, and the founder owns the final answers.
Does an AI review tell me whether I will be accepted?
No. It can identify ambiguity in supplied material. It does not know a private admissions decision, validate facts you did not provide, or establish selection probability.
Review, then submit through the official channel
Read the final answers in the actual form, check every claim and attachment, and confirm the program and cohort again. Keep your own approved copy. The founder submits through YC’s official application route. Preparing a draft in Finta does not submit it or establish that it was received.
Compare other programs in the startup accelerator directory. If invited to a conversation, use the existing accelerator interview preparation workflow.
This is an independent Finta preparation guide, not an accelerator application portal or an endorsed admissions service. Finta does not predict admission or speak for the program.
