Investor Conversations
How to Compare the Support Investors Offer
Compare investor support by translating broad promises into the specific jobs your company needs done, then checking who provides the help, how access works and what evidence supports it. A large network or a long service menu is not automatically useful to your next milestone.

What you will learn
- Translate value-add claims into concrete operating jobs
- Distinguish available support from guaranteed outcomes
- Build an evidence-based comparison without invented scores
Compare investor support by translating broad promises into the specific jobs your company needs done, then checking who provides the help, how access works and what evidence supports it. A large network or a long service menu is not automatically useful to your next milestone.
Start with three jobs the company needs
Choose needs from the operating plan: recruit a specific role, improve enterprise onboarding, or test a new channel. Name the owner, desired return and timing. “Connections” is not a job. “Help identify and evaluate an experienced implementation leader this quarter” is.
Keep must-have capabilities separate from nice-to-have extras. A company with its hiring covered may care more about the investor's technical judgment. Another may prefer a smaller, accessible team over a broad platform it cannot use.
Find the delivery mechanism
Read the investor's official support pages. a16z Growth describes categories including marketing, talent and finance support. Intel Capital describes its Embedded Expert Program. These examples show different mechanisms, not comparable service guarantees.
Ask who performs the work, which portfolio companies can access it, how requests are prioritized and whether the help is advisory or hands-on. Ask about costs, outside vendors and waiting time where relevant. A warm introduction to a recruiter is different from running a hiring process.
Use references to understand fit
Ask for founder conversations relevant to your stage and type of need. With permission, ask for a concrete example: what was requested, what was delivered, how long it took and what the founder still owned. Do not demand private company performance or treat one enthusiastic quote as a representative success rate.
Separate promised capacity from observed delivery. Save the support team's own explanation and the reference's context. An anecdote can improve your questions; it cannot establish what will happen for your company.
Worked comparison: do not add unlike scores
Fictional case: HarborOps needs help hiring an implementation lead and evaluating hospital sales.
Support comparison
| Need | Investor A | Investor B |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation hiring | Named talent adviser; candidate introductions, founder runs interviews | Partner offers two relevant founder introductions |
| Hospital sales | General playbook, healthcare experience unconfirmed | Named operator with relevant buyer experience; availability to confirm |
| Access | Request intake and prioritization explained | Informal partner-led route |
| Uncertainty | No guaranteed candidate or sale | No guaranteed operator time or sale |
The founder does not total “two resources versus one.” They compare evidence against the actual bottleneck and ask B to confirm operator availability before valuing it.

Finish with a realistic expectation
If a promise has no owner, scope or access route, label it unverified. If help depends on a third party, confirm that dependency. Do not count an introduction as a customer or a recruiting conversation as a hire.
You are finished when you can state which support you expect, how you would request it and what your team still needs to do. Operators building the support system itself should use the portfolio-support program guide; this worksheet is for the founder evaluating the offer.
