Social selling is the practice of building professional relationships around relevant conversations. On LinkedIn, that can mean learning from someone's work, contributing a useful perspective and reaching out with a clear reason to connect.
It does not mean sending the same sales pitch to every new connection.
Start with the person's work
Before you reach out, understand what the person does and what they have chosen to share publicly. Look for a real overlap with your work: a problem they are exploring, a community you both participate in, or a shared professional experience.
If there is no meaningful reason to connect, do not manufacture one. LinkedIn's guidance explicitly prohibits spam and other inappropriate activity.
Three ways to start a better conversation
After a real event:
Hi [Name], I enjoyed your point about [specific topic] at [event]. I'd be glad to stay in touch and follow what you're working on.
Around a shared question:
Hi [Name], your perspective on [verified topic] caught my attention. I'm exploring a related question about [specific issue] and would enjoy learning from your work.
With a mutual connection:
Hi [Name], [Mutual contact] mentioned that you have experience with [topic]. With their permission, I wanted to introduce myself and ask whether a conversation about [specific question] might be useful.
Only mention a mutual contact when that context is accurate and appropriate to share. A visible connection is not an endorsement.
A simple weekly rhythm
Choose a few people whose work genuinely intersects with yours. Read what they have shared, contribute when you have something useful to add, and follow up only when there is a clear reason. Track the conversation, not just the connection request, so your next note reflects what actually happened.

Share only information you are authorized to use, and review the result before acting.

Suggest a useful comment and a short connection note without invented familiarity or a generic pitch.
Move at the speed of the relationship
Reply to questions, share useful information and give people room to say no or not respond. When a business conversation is appropriate, explain why you think it may be relevant rather than assuming interest.
Finta can help you keep available relationship context and next steps together. Finta Networks supports importing a LinkedIn Connections CSV; it is not a live sync, and this workflow does not imply automatic LinkedIn messaging. Aurora can help prepare ideas for your review.
